Had English afternoon tea as part of a friend’s hen party. Dinner afterwards was in Toro (post to follow). Top tier: Profiteroles, Victoria sponge, and meringues. Middle tier: Smoked salmon and cream cheese, egg (and cress separate as a garnish), cucumber and cream cheese sandwiches. Bottom tier: Scones with strawberry jam and clotted cream. I found […]

Mission Burrito
Had a large carnitas (pork) burrito it cost £ 6.35 quite worth it as I ate it for lunch the next day too! I’m amazed they managed to pack 4x as much filling compared to what I could fit if I rolled my own. It was the first time I’ve heard of pork in Mexican […]
Las Iguanas
I come here occasionally for special occasions as my friends like it and one even declared that “they have the best nachos ever!” I beg to differ, the food here is only so-so and nothing there is spicy enough for my Malaysian tastebuds. On this occasion we were celebrating a friend’s birthday (for whom I […]
Brownies for friend’s birthday
Made a tray of brownies using Donal Skehan’s recipe for Super Chocolate Brownies. Topped with my invention – peanut butter crumble (chunky peanut butter mixed with icing sugar and milk). Went down fantastically all round!
Congee
Congee (rice porridge) is warming on a cold day or when you’re sick. It cooks in just 10-15 minutes. I came across this tip to speed up cooking: freeze the rice so that they disintegrate more easily when they become brittle after freezing. Pop them into a rice cooker with plenty of water (topping up the water if […]
Lunch at Vincenzo’s
This is a small family-run Italian restaurant situated in a terrace. You enter on the ground floor, and then find yourself on a terrace on the same level due to the steep slopes. That’s Park Street’s hills for you! For £ 4.95 from 12-3 pm, you get chips or salad with a main meal from […]
Signor Valentino, Cardiff
Had Fritto Misto off the lunch menu at £ 9.95 – it was the best seafood I’ve had so far in the UK and so worth it! Being a Penangnite, I miss fresh seafood. Description from the menu: “Selection of lightly-battered whitebait, king prawns, calamari, baby squid, mussels and sardines served with lettuce and fresh […]
Malaysian Kitchen truck with Ping Coombes
Ping Coombes made headlines back home when she won the title of MasterChef 2014 because she’s Malaysian. Was rather disappointed that the whole purpose of this tour was to promote ready-made Malaysian cooking sauces and Ping used them to prepare the food too. At least, the rendang was marinated overnight – that’s how it should […]
Scallops and fried rice
Used truffle-infused olive oil (bought from Italian stall at the Harbourside Festival) and garlic. The scallops were £ 6 frozen from M&S and do not shrink in size (cheap ones are injected with water to make them appear larger and thus shrink when cooked).
Vee Double Moo
Vee Double Moo sells ice-cream from a vintage VW camper van in a few locations across Bristol. This is Mr. Whippy Level 100! I think this was £ 3? Soft-serve ice-cream with brownie, hot fudge, peanut butter, crushed peanut brittle and whipped cream! Cardiac arrest-inducing especially after walking up Brandon Hill! 😛
